Last of the harvest: Fall took it’s time here in the north woods - the garden hung in there ‘til the frost, which finally came in October - very late for these parts.
I stayed busy putting up tons of greenery, it was a breeze to have such a leisurely time frame; I’ve often had to pull everything at once in a race against the weather.
Now in December, deep dark winter, opening the freezer to home grown goodness reminds me of the warm soil of summer. (Yes, it is warmer in our freezer than outside the front door right now!). The root cellar looks like it stepped back in time with all the jars of pickles, chutneys, jams & preserves lined up on shelves. Rhubarb makes many appearances and will keep us company ‘til next spring. Even with a crowd for Thanksgiving we didn’t manage to eat all the fiddleheads I put up last May - Only 5 or 6 months ‘til we start all over again.
For now I’m thankful I don’t have to drive on the icy roads for some veggies, Winter has started with full force; there will be plenty of time to post photos of snow.
