Well it’s the end of May, and all of a sudden Spring feels like Summer. Just 3 weeks ago there was snow in the garden and pussy willows on twigs, now I’m planting peas in the dirt and the Birch leaves are almost fully developed. It’s the time of year where everything speeds up, we’re up to 18 hours of energizing daylight every day; plenty of time to get all those chores done.
After we finished the indoor spring cleaning ritual we got busy with rakes and paintbrushes. Our white exterior doors always looked odd to us, but now they’re the right color nobody’s seemed to notice the difference! The lawn is looking carpet-like after Airon raked for days, I just saw the first dandelion today.
I’ve been starting seeds indoors since March, but now the plants are happy in natural light inside the greenhouse, ready to be out in the sunshine maybe next week: The full moon is coming up so the danger of any frost should be gone after that and I can get into some serious gardening.
All the birds are back too. I love lying on the grass listening to them in the morning, the snipes make the best noise as they fly in strange circles - it’s hard to catch sight of them. Tom cleaned out the swallow houses, we now have 7 nesting boxes, all occupied as far as I can tell. There’s always a Robin’s nest in an inconvenient place around here; this year there’s one on the old ox yoke hanging on the shed, it’s hard not to disturb them every time we go out the door…
May also brings us mountaineers headed for the Alaska Range. Climbers stay at Fireweed Station before and after their expedition, we enjoy getting to know them so we can think of them every time we look at Denali, and be thankful we’re in the thick air and glorious sunshine of downtown Sunshine.
