It’s easy to stray from the trail out in the woods this summer - it’s not always obvious where the trails are and I end up spotting a few berries to pick when I’m out and about.  Our old sled dog, Blue, knows the way home even if she takes the scenic route following some wild scent through the underbrush, she and I are great explorers in our back yard…

Airon has been getting further afield hiking and biking the trails around Talkeetna.  XY Lakes trails are actually marked for non-motorized use; easy for walking without wondering if you’re still on the right track.  From downtown Talkeetna you can walk out onto the river bar and connect to the trails that meander through the willows with the Alaska range in the background.  Most of the winter trails turn into summer hiking trails, it’s amazing to look at some of the hills we crash down in the dark on skinny skis!

I’m looking forward to getting out on the Denali State Park trails this month.  Less than an hour’s drive to Curry and K’esugi Ridges which stretch for 35 wilderness miles of alpine meadows, tundra, glacial streams and tons of blueberries!  Better get there soon as this sweet spot has been selected for the site of a new South Denali Visitors center and will probably see some tour bus traffic in the future.

Just a leisurely stroll around the grounds of Fireweed Station can be all you need to restore a peaceful mind, deep breaths of clean fresh air, bare feet in the grass; simple luxury!
