Pretty Boy Floyd and Pink Floyd hoping for a biscuit before we head out skiing.
Our old sled dogs don’t want to pull much anymore, but they’re usually happy to run along as we ski through the woods. Floyd is 14 years old and Pinkie is 10, so we don’t mind letting them slack-off. Today we were able to ski on the crust - it’s warming up during the day so the top layer of snow melts, then freezes again over night. If you’re up early you can ski on the crust without breaking through - and you can go anywhere. Tom & I headed out over the muskeg and then into the woods, exploring ridges and realizing how hard it is to turn skinny skis as you’re flying downhill towards another tree…
Floyd & Pinkie followed all kinds of animal tracks; we saw rabbits, fox, moose, and the squirrels are running everywhere these days. Ravens make the best tracks in my opinion; wing-tip paintings in the snow.
So, yes, I’m one of those annoying people that think winter isn’t long enough. This is the best part! Long days, warmer temps and great snow - I just got brand new, super-fast skis so I’m happy to be gliding along, wishing it could always be like this. Our Innkeeping season will be upon us very soon and the party will be over, only the dogs will continue to be slackers!
